As a college professor, like all teachers, I relish my students’ successes. Today, I’m a whole jar-full of relish. My students’ work is posted all over a Scientific American blog, Symbiartic. Yay!
Please visit Symbiartic to see lots more student illustrations – and don’t forget to share with all your friends!
Well done. (K.)
Thank you!
Wow. Fantastic. N.
Congratulations! :)))))
Thank you! The students and I are all very excited. 🙂
I can imagine!
Nice article and illustrations that are both accurate and artistic. I took a Scientific Illustration course years ago so I know how much work it entails.
Thank you. Yes, the students really put their hearts into those illustrations. Hope you liked you Sci.Ill. course! Where was it taught?
Ooops! Sorry I didn’t see this sooner. I took the class at the University of Washington. Favorite exercise: Cut a twig from a winter deciduous tree or shrub and put it in a vase with water. Draw the twig as it opens and grows using a different drawing technique once a week.
Love the exercise. What a great way to appreciate the wonder of a twig!
I just read your blog in Scientific American and I’m really fascinated with your course. I double majored in Biology and Studio Art in undergrad and now I’m currently in a PhD program in Cellular Biology. I was wondering if you could recommend how I could bring a course like this to my school.
Thanks
Jinelle
Hi Jinelle – Thanks so much for your interest in my course. I’m developing a distance training program for teachers – but I’m afraid it’s still a few years from launch. I’d be happy to chat more if you’d like to contact me at my work email address.
Thanks again!
Congratulations! Great article, I like the vascular stem tissue pictures, and appreciate a good drawing. Thanks for you work in the field!
Thank you! I like that illustration too… but, then again, I like them all. 🙂
Excellent article in Scientific American! I’m happy to have discovered your work as an artist/scientist, and your mission to bring art into the lives of biology students, and biology to non-scientists. As an artist, I fuse art with biology and teach art workshops without borders between the two. [Here’s an example of my own sketchbook pages: http://www.suzannestryk.com/sketchbks/sketchbks.html ] Thank you for your wonderful work.
Very cool website. Love the sketches and the layering in your paintings. Thanks for sharing!
